One of the area's
youngest suburbs, is located outside the City of Pittsburgh limits.
Brentwood is a small community boasting quiet streets, attractive
brick and stone homes and large trees.
Around seventy
five years ago the borough of Brentwood only included the tiny villages
of Brentwood, Point View, and Whitehall. Transportation improvements
made it possible for people to move out of the city and occupy and
develop the Brentwood area. Brentwood shifted from agricultural land
use at the turn of the century to commercial/residential land use
today. On Labor Day, September 3, 1928, the borough celebrated the
official opening of the park, pool, and paving of Brownsville Road.
As years passed,
the area transformed into a booming business and residential borough.
Whitehall Shopping center, the first shopping center in the entire
Pittsburgh area, was built in 1938. This was the first shopping complex
in the South Hills that housed business, professional, and entertainment
facilites. The retailing and professional services businesses that
are present today are mainly directed inward to the community and
surrounding area. Today, the area is experiencing a thriving rebirth
in the commercial sector. Brentwoods educational facilities include
two neighborhood public elememtary schools, one parochial elementary
school, and a middle and high school. The all of the Brentwood School
Districts facilities have been fully renovated to modern standards
making the borough a leader in modern educational services.
Most of the buildings
in Brentwood were built before 1950 and are single family homes, apartment
complexes and condominiums, and a mix of commercial/apartment type
dwellings in the business district.
Stemming from
a population of 900 inhabitants, Brentwood has grown to be a thriving
suburban area of 10,823.
The people of Brentwood are generally of German, Irish, and English
descent.
